MG MOTOR UK NURTURES FUTURE AUTOMOTIVE DESIGN TALENT WITH SAIC DESIGN CHALLENGE

MG Motor UK searches for next generation of talented automotive designers in seventh annual SAIC Design Challenge Theme of ‘Intelligent Frontier 2030’ evaluates students’ design interpretation of an intelligent, connected future European part of competition runs in conjunction with MG Motor UK’s parent company SAIC Motor and is open to design students across the continent Entrants will gain valuable experience and guidance from the in-house design teams at SAIC Motors’ two UK-based design studios   The SAIC Design Challenge returns for 2019 as the search gets under way to find the next generation of talented automotive designers. Now in its seventh year, the SAIC Design Challenge aims to inspire, engage and nurture the future of automotive designers from China and Europe. Fully supported by MG Motor UK, the competition is run by the iconic British brand’s parent company SAIC Motor and, for 2019, will task students to deliver their own design interpretation under the theme ‘Intelligent Frontier 2030’. This year’s theme looks to test students’ abilities in designing the MG of the future where emerging technology such as 5G and intelligent driving systems are expected to underpin future mobility. Under ‘Intelligent Frontier 2030’, students can bring their imagination to life with scale-model concept cars that will exist in a hyper-connected urban environment in 2030 and beyond. With support from MG Motor UK, the Europe-based finalists will gain valuable experience and guidance from the in-house design teams at the two UK-based design centres – Advanced London and Advanced Birmingham. These two cutting-edge digital design studios support the design and development of the future of mobility for the Roewe and MG brands. The competition was officially launched at London’s Royal College of Art (RCA) in the presence of Vice President of SAIC Design, Shao Jingfeng, alongside Design Director of SAIC Design Europe, Carl Gotham, and Dale Harrow, Chair and Director – Intelligent Mobility at the RCA. Carl Gotham, Director of SAIC Design Advance Europe, said: “MG is undergoing a tremendous transformation as it embarks upon a long-term growth strategy. Our two design studios in the UK employ 40 designers and this year’s competition enables our experienced team to mentor and connect with the up-and-coming future creatives who will be designing our range of MG products in the future. This is an opportunity for students to express their imagination and we are looking forward to judging each interpretation of their future MG designs.” This year, up to six shortlisted finalists will be selected to spend two months at one of the SAIC Design’s European Advanced Design Studios to refine their proposals under the guidance of the established full-time designers. Their digital based models and animations will then be judged at the Europe Region Awards Ceremony in September. Trym Abrahamsen, 2018’s European award winner, said: “The SAIC design challenge has been a game-changer for me. The opportunity to be part of a studio environment over the course of a summer, together with great follow up by professional designers has taken my skills to a new level. It has also been cool to try different technologies like VR in to the design process, seeing what skills are needed for the designers of tomorrow. “Winning the competition has really opened a lot of doors for me. You get in touch with many people from the industry and the tools to get your automotive design career going. The icing on the cake was of course going to the Shanghai studio seeing the physical mock-up of my alias model, something you cannot get from any other competition. As a student, I would really embrace this opportunity to take a first step into the professional world.”

MG ZS PROVIDES THE PERFECT HEDGEHOG AMBULANCE

MG Motor UK’s long-standing dealer, Cambridge MG, donates a ZS SUV to Shepreth Wildlife Conservation Charity (SWCC) Hedgehog Hospital, Hertfordshire MG ZS used to transport injured animals and relocate hedgehogs to safer areas as well as collecting generous donations from the public SWCC Hedgehog Hospital’s ZS is being used to drive community engagement and education in schools and with the public on hedgehog conservation Large boot means 448 litres of load space coupled with fold-flat rear seats for a maximum of 1,375 litres for maximum flexibility for Shepreth’s volunteers to conduct their remarkable work MG Motor UK is helping hedgehogs caught in prickly situations after its long-standing dealer, Cambridge MG, donated a ZS SUV to the Shepreth Wildlife Conservation Charity (SWCC) Hedgehog Hospital in Hertfordshire for use as a Hedgehog Ambulance. Shepreth Hedgehog Hospital, located within Shepreth Wildlife Park, took delivery of the new ZS to use for vet visits, returning rehabilitated hedgehogs back into the wild and collecting donations made by the public. The arrival of the Hedgehog Ambulance meant that hospital volunteers would no longer need to rely on their personal vehicles to carry out the critical tasks. Wrapped in SWCC’s own branding, the Hedgehog Ambulance also serves as an educational tool to drive community engagement and education in schools and the public on hedgehog conservation. The ZS is one of the most practical compact SUVs on the market with a 448-litre boot, which expands to an impressive 1,375-litre load space with the rear seat backs folded flat enabling the team of volunteers to move multiple hedgehogs in their hospital boxes, minimising the stress and disruption for the animals. Andrew Ballard, Managing Director at Cambridge MG, said: “We are delighted to be supporting the Shepreth Hedgehog Hospital - a team with such passion and commitment to helping animals in need. We used the hospital after discovering an injured hedgehog at home and wanted to assist the team to carry out their vital work. Shepreth Wildlife Park has supported MG Cambridge in the past, hosting promotional events at the site and this felt like the perfect way to show our appreciation.” The partnership also sees a further £100 donated to the charity when an MG is sold with the promotional flyer from Shepreth Wildlife Park, where the hospital is based. Since the ZS arrived at the hospital, Cambridge MG has sold an MG3 to the owner of a hedgehog sanctuary in Newcastle, as well as a ZS to a customer involved with the park. Sasha Sebright, Shepreth Hedgehog Hospital Manager, said: “Receiving the ZS from Cambridge MG has made a huge difference to our day-to-day lives at the SWCC Hedgehog Hospital. Where previously we had to rely on our own cars, staff can now use the dedicated ambulance to visit the vets and release sites. The large cargo area, smooth ride and quiet engine allows us to move multiple hedgehogs with little aggravation, as well as easily collect generous donations from members of the community when they cannot be delivered to our premises. “One clear difference has been having the car branded as the Hedgehog Ambulance. It has already been a fantastic educational tool, raising awareness of our work and in turn helping to protect hedgehogs locally and around the UK.” The ZS compact SUV is the brands best-seller, providing excellent value for money while offering an extensive list of equipment as standard. Starting from £12,495 OTR, all models come with Bluetooth, cruise control and a range of driver features including Hill Launch assist and tyre pressure monitoring system. The mid-range Excite model adds a DAB digital radio, climate control and Apple CarPlay. Top of the range Exclusive models come as standard with satellite navigation and a rear parking camera.
